Our Early Beginnings

However, the 1890s saw a setback with the Great Freeze, which nearly halted progress and turned Villa City into a ghost town. But adversity strengthened community bonds, and Lake County pressed on.
The 20th century brought new opportunities as developers marketed Lake County's appeal to Northerners and Midwesterners, emphasizing its favorable living conditions, farming potential, and health benefits. Throughout this journey, the South Lake Chamber of Commerce, initially the Board of Trade, played a vital role in guiding Lake County toward a brighter future.
Chamber's Roots
The South Lake Chamber's journey parallels Lake County's evolution. It originated as the Board of Trade in the early days of Clermont, focusing on city improvements, from road repairs to acquiring fire trucks. In 1922, it officially became the Clermont Chamber of Commerce. Decades later, in 1996, multiple Lake County chambers merged to form the South Lake Chamber of Commerce, the collective voice of the business community. Today, it encompasses Clermont, Groveland, Mascotte, Minneola, Montverde, and the Four Corners area, playing a pivotal role in these communities.
